Design Management

About

Over three years, led design teams at various scales: team lead on projects (3-person teams), fractional manager of design squads (5-person teams), manager of design squad leads (4 leads), Design Operations manager (13 people), and Head of Product Design (28 people with 6 team leads).

Challenge

Structuring the design process to create artefacts that guide designers through daily work and career development, across competency development, team management, and team processes.

Result

Created a comprehensive set of artefacts and processes: competency matrix, evaluation process, development plans, goal-setting guides, delivery standards, and a design activities database.

Competency Development

The competency matrix is the ultimate tool for profiling, growth, and assessing designers. It helps develop designers with a similar set of skills, works as a self-assessment tool, and shows a transparent career path. The full evaluation consisted of three stages: Soft skills review, UI (visual) skills review, and Competency matrix (UX skills review).

People Management

Setting up goals for teammates is a crucial element of translating company strategy and aligning designer professional development with company values.

Team Processes

To keep delivery at a proper level and collaborate effectively, every company needs a set of standards. Delivery standards were created and constantly updated, along with a design activities database to spread best practices.
